About this exercise

Battling ropes is a high-intensity conditioning exercise where you rapidly wave heavy ropes in alternating or simultaneous patterns, demanding continuous effort from the shoulders, core, and cardiovascular system.

How to Perform

  • Anchor two heavy ropes around a post or sled and stand at the other end, holding one end of each rope with a neutral grip
  • Adopt an athletic stance with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and core braced
  • Simultaneously or alternately drive the ropes up and down rapidly with your arms, creating large waves that travel the length of the ropes
  • Keep your back neutral and avoid rounding your shoulders
  • Maintain a consistent rhythm and pace for the duration of the set
