About this exercise

The barbell Zercher squat hold is an isometric variation where you descend into the Zercher squat position — bar cradled in the crooks of your elbows — and hold the bottom position for time. It builds tremendous quad endurance, core stability, and upper-back strength under sustained tension. The Zercher carry position also develops anterior core and thoracic strength not challenged by traditional squat holds.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell at waist height in a squat rack
  • Cradle the bar in the crooks of both elbows and hug it firmly against your body
  • Unrack and step back, feet slightly wider than shoulder-width with toes turned out
  • Brace your core hard and descend until your thighs reach at least parallel
  • Hold the bottom position with a strong upright torso and elbows pressed together for the target duration
  • Keep your breathing controlled — short exhales and inhales — throughout the hold
  • Drive through your heels to stand and re-rack the bar when the hold is complete
