About this exercise

A highly demanding unilateral squat where a barbell is cradled in the crooks of the elbows (Zercher position) while performing a Bulgarian split squat, combining anterior load with significant demands on leg strength, core stability, and upper-body tension.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell in a squat rack at about hip height
  • Stand in front of the bar and cradle it in the crooks of both elbows, pressing your forearms together to secure it
  • Step back and place the top of your rear foot on a bench behind you
  • Stand in a split stance with your front foot positioned well forward
  • Lower your body by bending the front knee until your rear knee nearly touches the floor
  • Keep your torso upright under the load and front knee aligned over your toes
  • Drive through the front heel to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch legs
