About this exercise

A back extension performed on a hyperextension bench while cradling a barbell in the crooks of both elbows (Zercher hold). The Zercher position increases loading on the posterior chain while demanding upper-back and core engagement to keep the bar secure throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell at hip height on a rack and load it to a manageable weight
  • Cradle the bar in the crooks of your elbows and hug it firmly against your torso
  • Step up onto the hyperextension bench and position the pad at your hip crease, toes pointing down
  • With the bar held close to your chest, hinge at the hips and lower your torso toward the floor under control
  • Squeeze your glutes and drive your hips into the pad to raise your torso back to parallel
  • Avoid hyperextending at the top — stop when your body forms a straight line
  • Complete the target reps, then carefully step off and set the bar down on the rack
