About this exercise

The barbell weighted chains bench squat adds accommodating resistance to the traditional bench squat by draping heavy chains over the barbell. As you descend, chains pile on the floor reducing load at the bottom; as you rise, more chain lifts off adding progressive resistance through the sticking point, developing explosive leg drive.

How to Perform

  • Set up a squat rack with the barbell at upper-chest height and drape weight chains symmetrically over each end of the barbell
  • Position a flat bench directly behind you as the depth target
  • Step under the bar and position it across your upper traps in a high-bar or low-bar squat position
  • Unrack the bar, step back, and set your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width with toes angled out slightly
  • Brace your core hard, take a deep breath, and descend by hinging your hips back and bending your knees
  • Lower in a controlled manner until you lightly touch the bench, keeping your chest up and knees tracking over your toes
  • Without bouncing off the bench, drive through your heels explosively to return to the standing position
  • Lock out hips and knees at the top before beginning the next rep
