About this exercise

A flat barbell bench press performed with heavy chains draped over each end of the bar, providing accommodating resistance — the load increases as the bar rises and decreases in the bottom position. This variation develops maximal strength and explosive pressing power in the chest, triceps, and front deltoids.

How to Perform

  • Load the barbell on a flat bench rack and drape a pair of chains evenly over each sleeve so the links pool on the floor at the bottom position
  • Lie flat on the bench with feet planted firmly on the floor
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width, retract your scapulae, and unrack the bar
  • Lower the bar with control to your mid-chest, allowing the chains to deload on the floor
  • Press the bar explosively upward until your arms are fully extended, feeling the chain load increase
  • Lock out at the top, then lower for the next rep
  • Re-rack the bar after completing all reps
