About this exercise

The barbell thruster combines a front squat and an overhead press into one fluid, powerful movement. It is a high-demand full-body exercise that builds strength, power, and conditioning simultaneously, and is a staple in weightlifting and functional fitness training.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell at shoulder height in a squat rack and unrack it in a front rack position — elbows high, bar resting on the front of your shoulders
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out
  • Descend into a full front squat, keeping your torso upright and elbows up
  • Drive explosively out of the squat, using the upward momentum to press the bar overhead
  • Fully extend your arms overhead at the top, locking out your elbows
  • Lower the bar back to the front rack position in a controlled manner as you simultaneously begin the next squat
  • Maintain core tension throughout the entire movement
