Barbell Sumo Romanian Deadlift

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Sumo Romanian Deadlift.

About this exercise

The barbell sumo Romanian deadlift combines the wide sumo stance with the hip-hinge mechanics of the Romanian deadlift, placing greater emphasis on the inner thighs and glutes while keeping the hamstrings under sustained tension. The wider foot placement shortens the range of motion slightly and allows heavier loads for many lifters.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width, toes pointed out at roughly 45 degrees
  • Grip the barbell with an overhand or mixed grip, hands inside your knees
  • Stand tall with the bar at hip level, shoulders back, and core braced
  • Push your hips back and hinge forward, keeping the bar close to your legs
  • Lower the bar until you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings, keeping your back flat
  • Drive your hips forward to return to standing, squeezing your glutes at the top
  • Maintain tension throughout — do not fully relax at the bottom or hyperextend at the top
