About this exercise

The Barbell Sumo Deadlift from Deficit is an advanced variation where you stand on a raised platform (typically weight plates or a small step), increasing the range of motion at the bottom. The wide sumo stance shifts emphasis toward the glutes and inner thighs, while the deficit demands greater hip and ankle mobility.

How to Perform

  • Place weight plates or a low platform on the floor and stand on them with the barbell in front of you at floor level
  • Set your feet wider than shoulder-width with toes turned out 30–45 degrees
  • Hinge at the hips and bend the knees to grip the bar just inside your legs with an overhand or mixed grip
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core, and press your chest up to establish a neutral spine
  • Drive through the floor with your legs and squeeze the glutes as the bar rises past your knees
  • Lock out the hips fully at the top, standing tall with shoulders back
  • Lower the bar back to the floor under control, maintaining a neutral spine throughout
  • Reset and repeat for the desired number of repetitions
