Barbell Stiff-Leg Deadlift

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Stiff-Leg Deadlift.

About this exercise

The barbell straight-leg deadlift is a hip-hinge movement performed with the knees nearly locked, placing maximum tension on the hamstrings throughout the range of motion. The barbell is lowered along the legs as the hips drive back, stretching the hamstrings before returning to standing through a powerful hip extension. It is an excellent exercise for isolating the posterior chain and improving hamstring flexibility and strength.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a barbell in front of your thighs with an overhand grip
  • Keep a soft bend in your knees and maintain this angle throughout the movement
  • Hinge at the hips and push them back while lowering the bar along your legs
  • Continue lowering until you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings or until your back begins to round
  • Drive your hips forward to return to the starting position, squeezing your glutes at the top
  • Keep the bar close to your body and your back flat throughout the entire movement
