Barbell Close Grip Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Close Grip Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The barbell close grip curl is a standing biceps curl performed with a narrow, shoulder-width or closer grip on the barbell. The reduced grip width shifts emphasis toward the long head of the biceps, adding peak and thickness to the upper arm. It is an effective isolation movement for building arm size and strength.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a barbell with an underhand grip, hands closer than shoulder-width apart
  • Keep your elbows pinned close to your torso and your upper arms stationary throughout the movement
  • Curl the bar upward by contracting your biceps until the bar reaches shoulder height
  • Squeeze the biceps at the top for a brief moment
  • Lower the bar in a controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Avoid swinging your torso or using momentum to lift the weight
