About this exercise

The barbell standing calf raise is a compound calf exercise performed with a barbell resting across the upper back. Raising onto your toes against the barbell's load builds size and strength through the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. It allows heavier loading than dumbbell or bodyweight variations.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and step under it, resting it across your upper traps
  • Place the balls of your feet on a raised platform or step, with your heels hanging off the edge
  • Stand upright with feet hip-width apart and a slight bend in the knees
  • Lower your heels as far as comfortable to achieve a full stretch in the calves
  • Press through the balls of your feet and rise up onto your toes as high as possible
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your calves
  • Lower back down in a controlled manner to the starting position
