About this exercise

A standing calf raise variation performed with knees slightly bent while standing on a raised platform (deficit), holding a barbell across the upper back. The bent-knee position shifts emphasis to the soleus muscle, while the deficit increases the range of motion for a deeper stretch at the bottom.

How to Perform

  • Position a weight plate or low platform on the floor as a deficit surface
  • Set a barbell at shoulder height in a squat rack, step under it, and rest it across your upper traps
  • Step onto the edge of the deficit platform with the balls of both feet hanging off
  • Bend your knees slightly and maintain that angle throughout the set
  • Lower your heels as far as possible toward the floor to achieve a full calf stretch
  • Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control back to the starting position
