About this exercise

The barbell split squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed with a barbell across the upper back and one foot stepped forward, placing greater emphasis on the front leg's quadriceps and glutes. It builds single-leg strength and helps correct muscular imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Set up a barbell on a squat rack and step under it, resting the bar across your upper traps
  • Take a split stance by stepping one foot forward and the other back, with feet hip-width apart laterally
  • Stand tall with your core braced and your torso upright
  • Lower your back knee toward the floor by bending both knees to roughly 90 degrees
  • Keep your front knee tracking over your toes without caving inward
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
