About this exercise

The barbell snatch from blocks is an Olympic weightlifting skill movement where the barbell starts at knee height or mid-shin on elevated blocks. The reduced range of motion allows you to focus on the second pull and overhead lockout, making it an effective technique builder and strength developer for the full snatch.

How to Perform

  • Set the blocks so the barbell rests at knee height or just below
  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, grip the bar with a wide snatch grip, and hinge into your starting position
  • Engage your lats and core, keeping your chest tall and back flat
  • Drive explosively through the floor, extending your hips and knees simultaneously in the first pull
  • As the bar reaches mid-thigh, aggressively shrug and pull the elbows high to initiate the second pull
  • Drop under the bar in a squat while punching your hands overhead to receive it with locked elbows
  • Stabilize in the overhead squat position, then stand tall to complete the lift
  • Lower the bar under control back to the blocks
