About this exercise

The barbell single leg split squat is a demanding unilateral lower-body exercise where the rear foot is elevated on a bench while the front leg does the work. It builds quadriceps and glute strength while challenging balance and hip stability.

How to Perform

  • Position a bench behind you and rest a barbell across your upper traps
  • Place the top of your rear foot on the bench and step your front foot forward far enough that your shin remains vertical at the bottom
  • Stand tall, brace your core, and keep your torso slightly upright
  • Lower your rear knee toward the floor by bending your front knee and hip
  • Descend until your front thigh is parallel to the floor, keeping your front knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through your front heel to return to the starting position
