About this exercise

A unilateral hinge movement performed with a barbell across the upper back while balancing on one leg, intensively loading the hamstring and glutes of the supporting leg. The single-leg stance greatly increases the demand on core stability and hip mobility compared to the bilateral version.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across your upper back as in a squat and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Shift your weight onto one leg and lift the other foot slightly off the floor
  • Hinge forward at the hip, extending the non-standing leg behind you for balance
  • Lower your torso until it is nearly parallel to the floor while keeping your back straight and your standing knee soft
  • Drive your hip forward to return to the upright position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other
