About this exercise

The barbell shrug is a classic upper-trapezius exercise performed standing with a barbell held at hip level. Elevating the shoulders under heavy load directly develops the traps and contributes to a thick, powerful upper back.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and hold a barbell in front of your thighs with a double overhand grip, arms straight
  • Keep your chest up and maintain a neutral spine throughout
  • Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold the top position for a moment to maximise trap contraction
  • Lower the shoulders back down in a controlled manner to full depression
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Barbell Shrug

The Barbell Shrug is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
