About this exercise

The barbell seated military press is a foundational shoulder exercise performed seated inside a squat cage, pressing a barbell overhead from shoulder height to full arm extension. The seated position eliminates leg drive, placing maximal demand on the deltoids and triceps, while the squat cage allows safe loading and re-racking without a spotter.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell at upper-chest height inside the squat cage and place an adjustable bench in the upright position underneath it
  • Sit on the bench and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with an overhand grip
  • Unrack the bar and bring it to the front of your shoulders, just below chin level
  • Brace your core and keep your back flat against the bench pad
  • Press the bar directly overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the bar in a controlled manner back to shoulder height
  • Complete all reps, then re-rack the bar safely
