About this exercise

The barbell seated good morning is a hamstring and lower-back exercise performed while seated on a bench. By removing the stabilization demand of the standing version, it allows greater focus on the posterior chain hinge movement pattern.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a flat bench and rest a barbell across your upper traps, hands wider than shoulder-width
  • Plant your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart
  • Brace your core and maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement
  • Hinge at the hips and lean your torso forward until it is roughly parallel to the floor, or as far as flexibility allows
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, feeling the stretch in your hamstrings
  • Drive your hips forward and return your torso to the upright starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
