About this exercise

The barbell seated calf raise isolates the soleus by performing calf raises with the knees bent at roughly 90 degrees and a barbell resting across the lower thighs. Elevating the balls of the feet on weight plates increases the range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a flat bench and place a barbell across your lower thighs, just above the knees
  • Position the balls of your feet on a stable elevated surface such as weight plates, heels hanging free
  • Lower your heels as far as possible toward the floor to stretch the calves
  • Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Pause and squeeze at the top, then slowly lower back down
