About this exercise

The barbell Romanian deadlift to row combines a hip hinge with a bent-over row, hitting the hamstrings, glutes, and back in one compound movement. The seamless transition between the two patterns makes it an efficient full-posterior-chain exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and grip a barbell with an overhand grip just outside your thighs
  • Hinge at the hips by pushing them back, lowering the barbell along your legs while keeping your back flat and knees slightly soft
  • Lower until you feel a deep stretch in your hamstrings, keeping the bar close to your body
  • From the hinge position, row the barbell up to your lower chest by driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together
  • Lower the barbell back to the hinge position under control
  • Drive your hips forward to return to the standing start position — that is one full rep
