About this exercise

The barbell reverse grip overhead press is a standing shoulder press performed with a supinated (underhand) grip, placing greater emphasis on the front deltoids and upper chest compared to the standard overhand press. The reversed wrist position also increases activation of the biceps as stabilizers and demands careful wrist and elbow alignment throughout the lift.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and unrack the barbell at chest height, using a supinated (underhand) grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Brace your core, keep your chest tall, and hold the bar just below chin level to begin
  • Press the bar directly overhead in a straight vertical path, fully extending the arms at the top
  • Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows and avoid letting them collapse backward during the press
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the bar in a controlled manner back to chin/upper chest level
  • Complete all reps, then re-rack the bar safely
