About this exercise

The barbell reverse grip floor press is a pressing variation performed lying on the floor with an underhand (supinated) grip. The floor limits the range of motion at the bottom, reducing shoulder stress, while the reverse grip shifts emphasis toward the upper chest and increases biceps involvement.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on the floor with a loaded barbell set in a rack at arm's length or rolled carefully into position
  • Take an underhand (supinated) grip on the bar, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Unrack the bar and hold it directly above your chest with arms fully extended
  • Lower the bar under control until your upper arms touch the floor
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, then press the bar back up to full arm extension
  • Keep your wrists straight and elbows at roughly a 45-degree angle from your torso throughout
  • Complete all reps, then rerack or lower the bar safely to the floor
