About this exercise

The Barbell Reverse Grip Bench Press uses a supinated (underhand) grip to shift emphasis toward the upper chest and biceps while reducing shoulder strain. It is an effective variation for targeting the clavicular head of the pectorals on a flat bench.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench and unrack a barbell with a shoulder-width supinated (underhand) grip
  • Lower the bar with control to your lower chest, keeping your elbows at roughly 45 degrees from your torso
  • Press the bar back up to the starting position, fully extending your arms without locking out
  • Keep your wrists straight and firm throughout — do not let them bend backward
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and maintain a slight natural arch in your lower back
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions and re-rack safely
