About this exercise

A classic reverse lunge performed with a barbell on the upper back, stepping one foot back to load the front leg. The movement builds unilateral strength and stability in the quadriceps and glutes while keeping the core and lower back actively engaged to support the load.

How to Perform

  • Position the barbell across your upper traps as in a back squat
  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and brace the core
  • Take a controlled step backward with one foot, landing on the ball of that foot
  • Lower the back knee toward the floor, keeping the front knee stacked over the ankle
  • Descend until the back knee nearly touches the floor
  • Push through the front heel to return to the standing position
  • Alternate legs or complete all reps on one side before switching
