Barbell Rear Delt Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Rear Delt Row.

MediumRear shoulders

About this exercise

A bent-over barbell row variation performed with a wide grip and elbows flared out at 90 degrees to the torso, shifting the focus from the lats onto the posterior deltoids and upper back. The high elbow path mimics a reverse fly, making it an effective mass builder for the rear delts.

How to Perform

  • Stand over the barbell with feet hip-width apart; hinge forward until the torso is nearly parallel to the floor
  • Grip the barbell wide (wider than shoulder width) with an overhand grip
  • Let the bar hang at arm's length below the chest
  • Row the bar toward the lower chest/upper abdomen by driving the elbows out to the sides at shoulder height
  • Keep the elbows flared and avoid bringing them behind the torso
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids and upper back at the top
  • Lower the bar slowly back to the starting position
