About this exercise

A bent-over lateral raise performed with a barbell, targeting the posterior deltoid and upper-back muscles. The movement is similar to a bent-over reverse fly but uses a barbell, which constrains the path and shifts emphasis to both rear delts simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and hinge forward at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Hold the barbell with an overhand grip, arms hanging straight down
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbows throughout
  • Raise the bar outward and upward in a wide arc, leading with the elbows
  • Lift until your upper arms are roughly parallel to the floor
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids at the top of the movement
  • Lower the bar slowly back to the starting position
