About this exercise

The barbell pullover to press is a compound bench exercise that links a lat-focused pullover directly into a chest press, training both pulling and pushing muscles in a single fluid sequence. The combination movement builds upper-body mass while improving shoulder flexibility and chest-to-lat coordination.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench with your upper back supported and feet flat on the floor
  • Hold the barbell over your chest with a shoulder-width overhand grip and arms slightly bent
  • Lower the barbell back in a wide arc behind your head, feeling a stretch in your lats and chest
  • Reverse the arc, pulling the barbell back over your chest to the starting position (the pullover)
  • From the chest position, press the barbell straight up until your arms are fully extended (the press)
  • Lower the barbell back to your chest with control
  • Repeat the pullover-to-press sequence for the desired number of reps
