About this exercise

The barbell power snatch from blocks is a power snatch variation where the bar rests on blocks at approximately knee height, eliminating the floor pull and allowing the lifter to focus entirely on the explosive second pull and overhead catch. It is an excellent drill for developing pulling speed, hip extension power, and the timing of dropping under the bar.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on blocks at knee height, take a wide snatch grip near the collars
  • Set up with feet hip-width apart, back flat, and hips below shoulder level
  • Take a breath and brace your core before initiating the pull
  • Explosively extend your hips and knees, keeping the bar close to your body
  • At full hip extension, shrug powerfully and continue pulling the bar upward with high elbows
  • Drop into a quarter squat while punching your hands overhead with elbows locked out
  • Catch the bar overhead with arms fully extended and hips slightly below parallel
  • Stand to full extension, then lower the bar back to the blocks under control
