About this exercise

The barbell power jerk is an Olympic lifting movement in which the bar is driven overhead using a two-phase dip-and-drive leg action, with the lifter catching it in a partial squat rather than a full split or squat. It develops explosive overhead pressing strength, full-body coordination, and the timing needed for the jerk component of the clean and jerk. The power jerk is often used as a teaching tool and an accessory to the split jerk.

How to Perform

  • Hold the barbell in the rack position across your front delts, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Dip slightly by bending your knees while keeping your torso strictly vertical and your elbows up
  • Explosively drive through your legs, extending fully at the hips, knees, and ankles
  • Press the bar overhead as your legs extend, then quickly drop into a quarter squat
  • Receive the bar with your arms fully locked out and hips slightly below your knees
  • Stand up to complete the lift, keeping the bar balanced directly over your mid-foot
  • Lower the bar back to the rack position under control
