About this exercise

A good morning variation where the barbell rests on safety pins inside a squat rack at approximately hip height, requiring each rep to begin from a dead stop and eliminating momentum. This builds raw hamstring and lower back strength through a demanding isometric-to-concentric transition.

How to Perform

  • Set the safety pins in the squat rack at approximately hip height
  • Position yourself under the bar so it rests across your upper back, then stand to lift it clear of the pins
  • Hinge forward at the hips with a soft bend in the knees, lowering your torso until the bar contacts the pins
  • Pause completely on the pins, allowing all tension to reset
  • Drive your hips forward and raise your torso back to the upright position
  • Re-rack the bar after all reps are complete
