About this exercise

A barbell bench press variation performed in a power rack where the bar starts and ends each rep on safety pins set at a specific height, eliminating the stretch-reflex and forcing the muscles to generate force from a dead stop. This develops pure pressing strength and is often used to target sticking points.

How to Perform

  • Set the safety pins in a squat rack at the desired height — typically just above the chest at the bottom of your press range
  • Place a bench inside the rack and load the barbell onto the pins
  • Lie on the bench and position yourself so the bar is directly over your chest
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with a firm overhand grip
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core, and press the bar explosively off the pins to full arm extension
  • Lower the bar under control until it rests completely on the pins and all tension is released
  • Reset your breath and brace, then drive through the next rep
