About this exercise

A sumo-stance barbell deadlift with a deliberate pause just below the knee, building positional strength and eliminating the stretch reflex from the floor. The wide sumo stance shifts greater emphasis to the glutes, inner thighs, and hamstrings compared to a conventional pull.

How to Perform

  • Position the barbell over mid-foot and stand in a wide sumo stance with toes turned out
  • Grip the bar inside your legs, hinge at the hips, and brace your core firmly
  • Begin the pull by driving the floor away, keeping the bar tight against your shins
  • Pause for 1–2 seconds when the bar reaches just below knee height
  • Continue the pull, driving your hips forward until you reach full lockout
  • Hinge back down under control, reset your brace, and repeat
