About this exercise

The barbell pause incline bench press is a strength variation performed on an incline bench where you hold the barbell motionless on the chest for one to two seconds each rep. Removing the stretch reflex increases time under tension and builds pressing strength in the upper chest.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a 30–45 degree incline and sit with your back flat against the pad
  • Unrack the barbell with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Lower the bar under control to your upper chest near the clavicles
  • Pause completely on the chest for one to two seconds without bouncing
  • Press the bar back up explosively to full elbow extension
  • Re-rack the barbell safely after completing all reps
