About this exercise

The barbell pause full squat descends to full depth — hips well below parallel — and holds the bottom position for one to two seconds before standing. The pause removes the stretch reflex and develops strength and mobility at the most mechanically challenging part of the squat.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across your upper traps and stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly flared
  • Brace your core and take a controlled breath before descending
  • Squat down until your hips are well below parallel, maintaining an upright torso
  • Hold the bottom position for one to two seconds without relaxing or losing tension
  • Drive through your heels and push your knees out to stand back up
  • Reset your breath and brace before the next rep
