About this exercise

The barbell pause front squat holds the barbell in a front-rack position and pauses at the bottom of the squat for one to two seconds. The pause eliminates momentum, demanding greater quad strength and thoracic extension, and is widely used in Olympic weightlifting development.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell in a front-rack position: fingertips under the bar, elbows high and parallel to the floor
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly flared
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core, and descend by pushing your knees out over your toes
  • Squat to full depth (hips below parallel) and pause completely for one to two seconds
  • Maintain an upright torso and high elbows throughout the pause
  • Drive through the floor to stand back up without losing the front-rack position
