About this exercise

The barbell pause decline bench press is a strength variation where you pause the barbell on the chest for one to two seconds at the bottom of each rep on a decline bench. The pause eliminates the stretch reflex, building raw pressing strength and lower-chest development.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a decline angle and secure your legs under the pads
  • Unrack the barbell with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Lower the bar under control to the lower portion of your chest
  • Pause completely on the chest for one to two seconds without bouncing
  • Press the bar back up explosively to full elbow extension
  • Re-rack the barbell safely after completing all reps
