About this exercise

The barbell pause deadlift introduces a controlled pause just below the knee or at the floor on the way up, reinforcing proper position and eliminating momentum at the most demanding portion of the pull. It is commonly used to address technical weaknesses in the conventional deadlift.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, bar over mid-foot, and grip just outside your legs
  • Hinge at the hips, brace your core, and pull your shoulders back and down before initiating the lift
  • Begin driving the floor away, keeping the bar in contact with your shins
  • Pause for one to two seconds at the specified point (typically just below the knee)
  • Continue the pull by driving the hips forward until you stand fully upright
  • Hinge back at the hips and lower the bar under control to the floor
