About this exercise

The barbell pause bench press is a powerlifting-style variation where the barbell rests motionless on the chest for one to two seconds before pressing. Eliminating the stretch reflex forces the chest, triceps, and shoulders to generate force from a dead stop, building raw pressing strength.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench with your feet flat on the floor and your shoulder blades retracted and depressed
  • Unrack the barbell with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Lower the bar under control to mid-chest, keeping your elbows at roughly 45–75 degrees from your torso
  • Let the bar rest completely on your chest for one to two seconds without bouncing or losing tightness
  • Press the bar back up explosively until your elbows are fully extended
  • Re-rack the barbell safely after completing all reps
