About this exercise

The barbell one-arm side deadlift is a unilateral hip-hinge exercise performed with the barbell held at the side of the body in one hand, similar to carrying a suitcase. It develops total lower-body strength through the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes while placing high anti-lateral-flexion demand on the core.

How to Perform

  • Place a loaded barbell on the floor parallel to your body
  • Stand beside the bar with your feet hip-width apart, the bar level with the middle of your foot
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to lower down, then grip the bar with one hand using a neutral grip
  • Brace your core, keep your chest up, and your spine neutral
  • Drive through the floor to stand upright, keeping the bar close to your leg without letting your torso tilt sideways
  • Stand fully erect with hips and knees locked out at the top
  • Lower the bar back to the floor under control and repeat
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching hands
