About this exercise

The barbell one-arm bent-over row is a unilateral pulling exercise in which one end of the barbell is anchored and the other end is rowed with a single hand. It strongly engages the lats and upper back on one side at a time, making it useful for correcting strength imbalances and building thick back muscles.

How to Perform

  • Place one end of the barbell in a corner or landmine attachment and load the other end with weight
  • Stand to the side of the loaded end, stagger your stance, and hinge forward at the hips to a roughly 45-degree angle
  • Grasp the end of the barbell with one hand using an overhand or neutral grip
  • Brace your core and retract your shoulder blade as you row the bar up toward your hip
  • Drive the elbow back and up, keeping it close to your body throughout the pull
  • Lower the bar in a controlled manner until the arm is fully extended
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other
