Barbell Narrow Stance Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Narrow Stance Squat.

MediumQuadriceps

About this exercise

A barbell squat variation performed with a narrower-than-shoulder-width stance, which shifts more emphasis onto the quadriceps while still engaging the glutes and hamstrings. The reduced foot width demands greater ankle mobility and quad flexibility, making it a valuable complement to wider squat stances.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on a squat rack at roughly upper-chest height and step under it so the bar rests across your upper traps
  • Place your feet closer than shoulder-width apart with toes pointing slightly outward
  • Unrack the bar, brace your core, and take one or two steps back
  • Take a deep breath in, then descend by pushing your knees forward over your toes while keeping your torso as upright as possible
  • Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your whole foot to press the floor away and return to the starting position
  • Exhale at the top and reset before the next rep
