About this exercise

The skull crusher is a classic triceps isolation exercise performed lying on a bench. The barbell is lowered toward the forehead or nose by bending the elbows, then pressed back to full extension. It targets all three heads of the triceps and is one of the most effective exercises for building upper-arm size and strength.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a bench and grip the barbell with an overhand, shoulder-width grip
  • Press the bar to full arm extension directly above your face
  • Keeping your upper arms vertical and elbows pointing toward the ceiling, bend your elbows to lower the bar toward your forehead or nose
  • Stop just above your forehead without touching your head
  • Extend your elbows powerfully to press the bar back to the starting position
  • Keep your upper arms stationary throughout the movement
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
