About this exercise

The barbell low split squat is a loaded unilateral leg exercise where a barbell rests across the upper back while you descend into a deep split squat, bringing the rear knee close to the floor. It builds significant quad and glute strength through a full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and step under it, resting it across your upper traps
  • Step back from the rack and take a staggered stance with one foot forward
  • Brace your core and lower your body by bending both knees until the rear knee nearly touches the floor
  • Keep your torso upright and your front knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through your front heel to press back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg, then re-rack and switch stance to train the opposite leg
  • Start with a light load to master the range of motion before progressing weight
