About this exercise

The low-bar barbell squat positions the bar across the rear deltoids, lower on the back than a high-bar squat, enabling a more forward torso lean and greater engagement of the posterior chain. This powerlifting-style squat heavily recruits the glutes and hamstrings alongside the quadriceps, making it one of the most effective lower-body compound movements. A squat rack is required for safe loading and unracking.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on the squat rack at approximately chest height
  • Position the bar low across your rear deltoids, just below the spine of the scapula
  • Step back from the rack with feet shoulder-width apart and toes angled slightly outward
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core, and create full-body tension before descending
  • Push your hips back and down, maintaining a controlled forward lean of the torso
  • Lower until your hips reach or drop below parallel with your knees
  • Drive through your heels and mid-foot to stand back up with force
  • Re-rack the bar safely once the set is complete
