About this exercise

The barbell lateral lunge is a unilateral lower-body exercise that places a barbell across the upper back while stepping out to one side into a deep lateral lunge. It builds strength and mobility in the quadriceps, glutes, and inner thighs, while also challenging hip adductor flexibility.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and step under it, resting it across your upper traps
  • Unrack the bar, step back, and stand with feet together and core braced
  • Take a wide step directly to one side with one foot, keeping the other foot planted
  • Shift your weight over the stepping leg, bending that knee deeply while keeping the opposite leg straight
  • Keep your chest tall and the bent knee tracking over your toes throughout the descent
  • Push through the heel of the bent leg to drive yourself back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching, or alternate sides each rep
