About this exercise

A deadlift variation using the hook grip, where the thumb wraps around the bar first and is then covered by the fingers. The hook grip provides superior bar security compared to a standard double-overhand grip and is widely used by Olympic weightlifters and powerlifters for heavy pulls.

How to Perform

  • Position the barbell over your mid-foot and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Reach down and wrap your thumbs around the bar, then place your fingers over your thumbs to lock them in place
  • Set a neutral spine with hips below shoulders, chest tall, and lats engaged
  • Push through the floor with your heels and extend the hips and knees simultaneously
  • Keep the bar in contact with your shins and thighs as it travels upward
  • Stand fully upright with hips locked out, then lower the bar with control to the floor
