About this exercise

The barbell hang clean below the knees is an Olympic weightlifting variation where the bar starts in a hang position just below knee height before being explosively pulled into a front rack catch. Starting below the knees demands greater posterior chain strength, a stronger back angle, and increased hip extension speed compared to the standard hang clean.

How to Perform

  • Stand holding the barbell with a shoulder-width overhand grip, hinge at the hips and lower the bar to just below knee height
  • Set your back flat, chest up, and shoulders slightly in front of the bar
  • Take a breath and brace your core before initiating the pull
  • Drive through your legs explosively while shrugging your shoulders and pulling the bar upward, keeping it close to your body
  • As the bar rises to upper-chest height, pull your elbows forward and under the bar quickly
  • Catch the bar in the front rack position with elbows high and parallel to the floor
  • Stand to full extension
  • Lower the bar under control back to the starting hang position
