About this exercise

The barbell hack squat is a lower-body exercise where the barbell is held behind the legs while you perform a squat movement, placing the bar close to the calves. It strongly targets the quadriceps and is historically one of the original variations that inspired the modern hack squat machine.

How to Perform

  • Stand with the barbell on the floor directly behind your heels, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to reach back and grip the bar with an overhand grip at hip width
  • Brace your core, keep your chest up, and begin to stand by driving through your heels
  • Keep the bar tracking close to the back of your legs as you rise to a full standing position
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your quads and glutes
  • Slowly lower the bar back to the floor by hinging at the hips and bending the knees, keeping the bar close to your body
  • Reset and repeat
